About the museum
Palazzo Citterio is an eighteenth-century building at numbers 12–14 via Brera, in the centre of Milan. The State bought it in 1972 on the initiative of Franco Russoli, then director of the Pinacoteca di Brera, to expand the museum's spaces and devote them to modern and contemporary art. The restoration project lasted more than half a century and concluded with a design by the architect Mario Cucinella.
The palace was opened to the public on 8 December 2024 as part of the Grande Brera, the museum complex that also includes the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense. The institution was established by ministerial decree in 2014 and also runs the Mediateca Santa Sofia.
On the piano nobile over 200 works are on display, largely from two collections: the Jesi collection, donated to the Pinacoteca between 1976 and 1990 by the collectors Emilio and Maria Jesi, who lived in the same palace, and the Vitali collection, bequeathed by Lamberto Vitali. Among the artists represented are Boccioni, Morandi, Modigliani, Picasso and Carrà; room 40 places Pellizza da Volpedo's “Fiumana” alongside works by Previati and Boldini. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions, including in the Sala Stirling, and a new reception designed according to the principles of universal design.
