About the museum
Villa Jovis stands on the summit of Monte Tiberio, in the eastern part of Capri, and is the largest of the island's Roman villas. It was the residence of the Emperor Tiberius, who governed the empire from there between 26 and 37 AD, and it covers an area of about 7,000 square metres. The complex was enlarged to suit the emperor's needs and included large cisterns beneath the foundations, which collected rainwater for the needs of the residence.
After antiquity the villa fell into abandonment. It was rediscovered in the 18th century under Charles of Bourbon, was cleared of vegetation and restored in 1932 under the direction of the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri. Since December 2014 the site has been managed by the Ministry of Culture.
Today the visit allows you to walk through the remains of the villa's different levels, with wide views over the Gulf of Naples and the island. The site is part of the Musei e Parchi archeologici di Capri together with the Certosa di San Giacomo and the Casa Rossa.
