Special exhibition
Temporary exhibition in the 1928 Schiphol building about KLM's first scheduled flight to New York in 1946; outside, a Douglas DC-4 in the livery of the PH-TAR is open to visitors.
The Aviodrome's roots go back to the 1950s, when KLM, Fokker and other partners set up a foundation for a national aviation museum. A first display called Aeroplanorama showed a few aircraft at Schiphol Airport from 1960 but had to close in 1967 for lack of space. In 1971 the Aviodome opened there, its hall formed by a geodesic aluminum dome based on ideas by Buckminster Fuller.
In 2003 the museum moved to Lelystad Airport and was renamed Aviodrome. On the extensive site, several hangars were built, along with a replica of the 1928 Schiphol terminal building and an outdoor area, to which a retired KLM Boeing 747 was brought by pontoon in 2004.
At the end of 2011 the operating company went bankrupt and the museum closed for several months. The leisure group Libéma took over management in 2012 and reopened the museum in April of that year. The collection itself is managed by the Stichting Collectie Aviodrome, supported by numerous volunteers who restore historic aircraft in hangar T2.
Today the collection comprises more than 100 civil and military aircraft from the pioneer era to the present, complemented by exhibitions on jet aircraft, spaceflight and air traffic control, simulators, a 4D cinema and an extensive aerial photo archive.
