About the museum
The Bijlmermuseum tells the story of the Bijlmermeer in south-east Amsterdam, a high-rise estate planned according to the principles of modern urban planning (CIAM) with a strict separation of functions. The first pile was driven in 1966. The website describes the district as a "banned utopia": a large part of the story is about how the generous concept with gallery-access flats, elevated roads and parking garages failed in everyday life and how the residents organised themselves.
The museum's online pages cover around forty topics, including the design and path system, the Bauhaus manifesto, garages, resident participation, the Kwakoe festival, the metro, the Bijlmerramp of 1992, and renewal and demolition. The name "Bijlmermuseum" there also stands for the protected townscape of the G- and K-Buurt, which is to be preserved as a whole.
The "physical museum" is located in an apartment in the Grubbehoeve, one of the Bijlmer's slab-style apartment blocks, under the motto "Living in a museum". Visitors can see it only by arrangement by telephone or email.
