About the museum
The house De Wieger was built in 1922 in the Neo-Renaissance style to plans by the architect Cor Roffelsen for the doctor Hendrik Wiegersma, who had lived in Deurne since 1917. In the early 1920s Wiegersma got to know the artists Moissey Kogan and Otto van Rees and began working as a painter himself without giving up his medical practice. Between the wars the house became a meeting place for artists; sculptors such as Ossip Zadkine were frequent guests. The woods that Wiegersma planted around the house became known through the song “Het dorp”, which his son Friso Wiegersma wrote for Wim Sonneveld.
After Wiegersma's death in 1969, the municipality of Deurne bought the property in 1972 and converted it into a museum; it succeeded the museum Het Dinghuis, in which Wiegersma's collection had already been shown during his lifetime. His second son Pieter ran the museum until 1988 as its first director. Since 2001 the building has been listed as a Rijksmonument.
The core of the collection is the legacy of Hendrik Wiegersma, with the focus on Dutch art of the first half of the 20th century, with works by Charley Toorop, Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Theo van Doesburg, Jan Mankes and Else Berg. Two former studios of the owner now serve as event and course rooms, and there is also a museum garden.
