Grote Kerk Alkmaar
Alkmaar’s late Gothic main church with famous organs, vault paintings and a permanent exhibition – today a cultural venue with free admission.
About the museum
The Grote Sint-Laurenskerk was built between 1470 and 1518 to designs by the Keldermans family of master builders in the Brabantine Gothic style, as a cruciform brick basilica faced with dressed stone. It was one of the largest Catholic churches in the Netherlands of its day; a huge altarpiece of St. Lawrence by Maarten van Heemskerck was created for it.
With the Reformation, the church passed to the Protestants in 1573, who removed the images and altar decorations; the great altarpiece was sold to Sweden. What survived includes the vault painting of the Last Judgment by Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, the choir organ by Van Covelens from 1511 – one of the oldest organs still playable – and the Baroque main organ by the Van Hagerbeer family, which Frans Caspar Schnitger rebuilt in 1725. Some 1,750 tombstones cover the floor.
Since 1996 the church has no longer been used for worship; as the city’s “culturele huiskamer” (cultural living room), it hosts concerts, exhibitions and events, run jointly with the De Vest theater. For the 500th anniversary in 2018, the altarpiece returned from Sweden for a few months. In 2023, to mark 450 years of Alkmaars Ontzet (the relief of Alkmaar), the stained-glass window “Het Grote Raam,” designed by Fiona Tan, was unveiled in the south transept.
A permanent exhibition with display cases and screens tells the story of the building, the burials and the artworks; in summer, programs of contemporary art such as “Nieuw Licht” and “Hallelujah! Actuele Altaarstukken” round out the offering.
