The Congolese artists' collective CATPC shows sculptures cast from cocoa, palm oil and sugar and embroidered cocoa sacks addressing plantation exploitation; it uses the proceeds to buy back land.
More than eighty works from the Centre Pompidou, including "La Blouse roumaine", show Matisse's development and his influence on contemporaries and successors such as Picasso and Rothko.
About the museum
The Amstelhof on the banks of the Amstel opened in 1683 as a home of the Reformed diaconate for needy elderly women; from 1817 it also took in men. The building's large church hall was regularly used for services into the 20th century. The complex has been called Amstelhof since 1953, and the building is protected as a national monument (Rijksmonument).
After the last residents moved out in 2007, the idea of a museum arose at the suggestion of Ernst Veen, then director of the Nieuwe Kerk. With loans from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the museum opened in 2009 as Hermitage Amsterdam and for years showed major exhibitions from the Russian collections.
After the Russian attack on Ukraine, the museum ended its collaboration with the Hermitage in 2022. Under its new name, H’ART Museum, it has been working with international partners since 2024, above all with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, from whose holdings exhibitions on Kandinsky, Brâncuși and Matisse, among others, have been shown.
The museum has no permanent collection of its own and shows only temporary exhibitions. The complex includes a quiet courtyard with old chestnut trees, a Grand Café, children's studios and historic rooms such as the church hall and the regents' rooms, which are also rented out for events. Organizationally, the museum is linked to De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam.
