About the museum

Museum Het Bolwerk tells the military history of the border region of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and focuses on the Staats-Spaanse Linies – a chain of defensive works built during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) between the Netherlands and the Spanish-held territories. IJzendijke, only a few kilometres from the Belgian border, was one of the fortified places along these lines.

The collection is housed in the former governor's building on the market square of IJzendijke. The timeline stretches from the Roman fort in Aardenburg to the bunkers of the Second World War. Maps, drawings, models and finds show how warfare and fortress construction changed over the centuries; five LEGO dioramas bring scenes of local history to life. Since 2023, a model has shown the explosion of a truck loaded with nitroglycerine in October 1944.

The museum is run by the foundation Stichting Museum het Bolwerk, in which paid staff and a larger group of volunteers work together. In the 2026 season the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary. An audio tour leads through IJzendijke and its fortifications; during museum hours the Mauritskerk is also accessible.
