About the museum
The Huizer Museum tells the history of Huizen, a former fishing village on the old Zuiderzee, and increasingly widens its scope to the Gooi region. It is housed in the Schoutenhuis on the Achterbaan, in the old village core. The building goes back to the front house of a 17th-century farm on the edge of the historic fishermen's quarter; in the 19th century it was extended with an extra storey, and part of it served the municipality as a meeting place and the bailiff as a residence.
After being converted into two residential and commercial buildings in 1920, the building was demolished in 1994 and rebuilt in the 19th-century style. Since then it has served as a museum, which also houses the tourist information office (VVV) and the archive of the Historische Kring Huizen.
The collection includes one of the more important collections of traditional costumes in the Netherlands, paintings by artists of the Laren School who worked in Huizen, and a tile panel from the De Driehoek pottery that was saved when the factory was demolished. Changing exhibitions take up current themes; the museum also offers village walks, guided tours and programmes for schools.
