About the museum
The museum is located in the former fisheries school of IJmuiden on the Havenkade. As the port town grew after the construction of the North Sea Canal, training for the fishing industry became more important; in 1905 an association for the fisheries school was founded, and on 3 September 1916 the building was opened as the municipal Visserijschool. Between 1956 and 1970 it also housed an inland waterway skippers' school. Later the building stood empty and was due to be demolished.
In 1989 a foundation was established to save the building and turn it into a museum of the sea and the port. About 70 volunteers restored it, and on 26 March 1994 the IJmuider Zee- en Havenmuseum "de Visserijschool" opened. To this day it is run on a voluntary basis by around 90 volunteers and supported by sponsors and donors.
In 13 halls with permanent exhibitions and two halls for changing exhibitions, the museum shows the development of IJmuiden and the North Sea Canal, fishing, piloting, sea rescue, towing, ship engines, Amsterdam shipping companies, industry in Velsen, and radio and telegraphy. Notable items include the spade and wheelbarrow from the first sod-cutting of the canal on 8 March 1865 (on loan from the Rijksmuseum) as well as the document and the eagle feather from the opening on 1 November 1876. There are also a radar tower with a view over the harbours, an engine hall, a maritime library, a cinema and the outdoor area "Havenkant" with lifeboats and the cutter UK27.
