About the museum

The Industrieel Museum Zeeland opened on 27 June 2015 in Sas van Gent, in the former sugar sheds of the Eerste Nederlandsche Coöperatieve Beetwortelsuikerfabriek on the Westkade. It shows the journey from sugar beet to sugar and gives an overview of Zeeland's industrial development from the late 19th century to the present and future.

The permanent exhibition is divided into four zones and several pavilions. It begins with the question of how industry comes into being and devotes a pavilion made of stacked containers to the sugar industry. Further areas cover energy with a steam-powered generator, work in the factory including a safety test, time clock and machines from the textile and chemical industries, and logistics by road, water and rail. The finale consists of future topics such as wind energy and a 3D lab.

The museum sees itself as a hands-on museum; its motto promises that here you "look with your hands". An introductory film, a Doe-Boekje (activity booklet) for children and a free audio tour complement the tour. Many tasks are carried out by volunteers, who also give guided tours and, in the project "Zeeuws DNA in Oral History", record memories from regional industry. The museum is an accredited museum and accepts the Museumkaart.
