About the museum
The museum bears the name of Arnoldus Johannes Andreae, a notary and historian regarded as the first chronicler of the village of Kollum and the former municipality of Kollumerland. According to the Dutch Wikipedia article, the museum was housed in the former post office from 1980; since the summer of 2017 it has been located in the "Oostenburg" building in the middle of the village.
The site has a long prehistory: in 1773 Eyso de Wendt, a Kollum native and merchant who had grown rich in the China trade, had a country estate laid out here, extending as far as the Dokkumer Trekvaart. His descendants sold the estate in 1836 for demolition. In place of the country house, a new poorhouse was built that closely resembled the older building. During a restoration in 1979 the original entrance was restored. Today the building is a Rijksmonument.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to themes from the history of Kollum and the Kollumerland. One focus is the Kollum uprising of 1797, in which supporters of the House of Orange rose against the Patriots. Other themes are the Andreae family, the village's gold- and silversmiths, a small village shop and the athlete Foekje Dillema. Since 2009 the Archaeological Base for Kollumerland has also been part of the museum. Each year the museum also stages a seasonal exhibition.
