About the museum
The museum is located in the former bathhouse of Vogeldorp at the corner of Zamenhofstraat and Meeuwenlaan. After the First World War there was a severe housing shortage, which is why the emergency villages Disteldorp and Vogeldorp and the Van-der-Pek neighborhood were built in Amsterdam-Noord. The workers' houses had no bathroom of their own, so the Vogeldorp bathhouse was built in 1919, one of twenty-one in the city.
The bath closed in 1986. After it was sold to Stadsherstel, the building was restored and has housed the museum since April 2009. The museum has the status of a charitable institution (ANBI).
The house aims to connect old and new residents of the district, and past and present, through stories. Two permanent exhibitions are devoted to the history of Amsterdam-Noord and to the history of Vogeldorp and its bathhouse; in addition there are changing exhibitions, lectures, film evenings and walks through the district.
