About the museum
Since 1963 the Admiraliteitshuis in Dokkum's old town has served as a regional museum; the house was formerly called Museum Het Admiraliteitshuis. It consists of several historic buildings, including the 17th-century seat of the Admiralty of Friesland and Groningen, dated 1618.
The museum shows around 2,000 years of culture in north-eastern Friesland, with everyday objects, folk art, paintings and Frisian stoneware. Particularly well known is the collection of Frisian silver, a large part of which comes from Dokkum goldsmiths and silversmiths. In addition there is a significant textile collection with Frisian costumes, flodder caps and merklappen (marking cloths).
In a former warehouse of around 1800, now part of the complex, a permanent exhibition commemorates Boniface (c. 672–754), the missionary who died near Dokkum. Other areas are devoted to the history of Dokkum, Claercamp Abbey, children's toys and the town's "seven hotspots". The museum is run by the Stichting Musea Noardeast Fryslân and also houses the town's Toeristen Informatie Punt (TIP).
