About the museum

The museum opened on 24 November 1935 in the basement of Oss town hall. The collector Jan Cunen (1884–1940) laid its foundations; early acquisitions include finds from the famous princely grave of Oss, and portraits of mayors and entrepreneurs followed later. After Cunen's death, the museum was named after him in 1949. In the 1950s and 1960s, the curator Toon de Werd expanded the collection with paintings of the Hague School, and the focus later shifted to modern and contemporary art.

Today the museum is housed in the Villa Constance, which the architect H. R. Hendriks designed in 1888 for the margarine manufacturer Arnold van den Bergh. Between 1921 and 1974 it served as the town hall; since 2001 it has been a national monument. In 1978 the building was briefly called the "Jan Cunen centrum", and in 2010 it returned to museum status. After a renovation in 2016, the café and a larger shop were added.

The collection comprises around 3,800 objects, from prehistoric finds and 19th-century paintings, for example by Mesdag and Maris, to photography. In 2023 the museum received the VriendenLoterij Museumprijs.
