About the museum
The Museum Maassluis was founded on 1 June 1933 and sees itself as the town museum of, for and about Maassluis. The Museum Maassluis Foundation manages the town's historical collection and art collection, preserves them, expands them in a targeted way and makes them accessible to as wide an audience as possible. All objects must have a connection to Maassluis.
The art collection “collectie 1900” is based on a core collection donated by the De Vries couple in 1970. The artists Jeanne Oosting, Otto B. de Kat, Jan van Heel and Sierk Schröder are regarded as its core, with Wally Elenbaas added later; there are also works by local artists, some of which also have historical value because of their topographical subjects.
In the Dijkzaal, the permanent exhibition tells the town's history in a “Canon of Maassluis”: the mystery surrounding the origin of the Wilhelmus, the Spanish attack in the Eighty Years' War, the pastor Johannes Fenacolius, who had the Groote Kerk built, the benefactor Govert van Wijn, fishing and the bombardment that devastated the town. Temporary exhibitions take place in the Tuinzaal and the Vrieskabinet; since July 2025 there has been a renewed museum garden. Around 50 volunteers run the museum together with a small permanent team, and school classes from the town visit via the Cultuurmenu.
