About the museum
Museum Staphorst grew out of the former Museumsboerderij, which Prince Claus opened on June 9, 1982 by planting an oak tree. In 2022 the museum celebrated its fortieth anniversary. Since 2013 it has been run as an independent foundation and relies entirely on volunteers.
The museum consists of two buildings: the reception building houses the entrance and a lounge, and the farmhouse is set up as a museum. It sees itself as the cultural-historical heart of the village and tells of traditions without ignoring change. In Staphorst, some women still wear costume every day.
The permanent exhibition includes, among other things, an authentic Staphorst living room as well as displays on costume and crafts. Short films about clothing run in several places. Each year a temporary exhibition on a new theme is added. The Staphorst Stipwerk, the dot embroidery of the costume, is also well known, and the museum offers workshops on it for groups.
For children there are free puzzle rallies and the Speulhuus, with old-fashioned games where you can try on costume yourself. In good weather, children can play on the village square and on the grass.
