About the museum
The museum's roots go back to 1932, when the antiquarian society De Ghulden Roos began collecting objects and documents on the history of Roosendaal. From 1936 the collection was shown in the old town hall; in 1974 it moved into the Tongerlohuys, a parsonage built in 1762 on the Kerkstraat. When the city archive moved out in 1991, the museum gained space; in 2006 it joined forces with the Stichting Int Heyderadey, and in 2016 it developed into the city's comprehensive heritage center.
The collection ranges from archaeological finds through objects related to peat extraction, devotional religious images and club souvenirs, to costumes, industrial history and household items from around 1910. It is supplemented by the Verhalenbank, where Roosendaal residents tell their memories, and by an online searchable object collection. The museum belongs to the Cultuurcluster Roosendaal, which also includes Theater De Kring, CultuurCompaan and the Sint-Jan church.
Since 2025 the main building has been undergoing conversion and sustainability upgrades. Until the planned return in 2027, the museum is housed in the EKP building on Kadeplein, which is connected to the post office and the railway. There it shows a smaller-scale presentation on the history of Roosendaal, starting in the 12th century.
