About the museum
The Noord-Nederlands Trein & Tram Museum foundation was established by notarial deed in Zuidbroek on 17 July 2001. Its aim is a museum that shows the history of the railway network in the north of the Netherlands, as well as the research, documentation and archiving of that history. The museum is housed in the former station building of Zuidbroek, a so-called Waterstaatstation: a type with classicist features designed by the engineers of the Rijkswaterstaat, which was economical and functional but was still meant to radiate some dignity. The museum advertises that it preserves the oldest station in Groningen.
The museum is run entirely by volunteers. Its offerings include a permanent exhibition on regional railway history, a train simulator in which visitors can play train driver themselves, large model railways by the Model Rail Groep Veendam and changing small exhibitions, for example on railway accidents in the north or Märklin models. In 2026 the museum showed, together with the Bevrijdingsmuseum Noord-Nederland, an exhibition on the railways in the Second World War.
