About the museum
The Schaakstukkenmuseum opened in Rotterdam on 1 May 2006. It is based on the private collection of its founder, Ridder Dijkshoorn, supplemented by a collection from the collector M. J. Glotzbach. Over the years the permanent collection has kept growing and now covers a wide range: from antique chess sets and folk art to figures from film and pop culture and abstract works of art.
The museum is located on Overblaak, right next to Blaak station, beneath the famous Kubuswoningen (Cube Houses). Each month it presents a special set on its website; the historian Marjolein Overmeer tells the story of the pieces or of what they represent. Changing special displays complement the permanent exhibition.
A fixed part of the year is the chess set design competition: artists and hobbyists alike submit sets they have designed and made themselves, which are shown in the museum. Visitors form the jury and vote throughout the year; the winners are announced at the museum around the turn of each year. A picture gallery on the website gives an impression of the collection.
