About the museum
The Stadsmuseum Steenwijk goes back to a bequest: Grietje Reiners left the town her house on the Markt together with a large collection of porcelain, silver and copperwork, coins, a few paintings and some furniture. With this, the foundation established in 1941 was able to set up an antiquities room, from which today's town museum emerged.
The house at Markt 64 was thoroughly restored and refurnished in 1980; the exhibition rooms were extended and the inner courtyard enlarged and repaved. The museum is nationally registered, meaning it meets the nationwide requirements for organisation, presentation and care of its holdings.
Its focus is on six core collections of well-known 20th-century Steenwijk manufacturers: Eskaf ceramics, Wildebras dolls, Monsieur furniture, Bijkamp silver, the cigar and tobacco industry, and the history of the fortress town. There are also archaeological finds, maps, needlework and objects from the town's history, as well as recreated rooms such as a classroom, a small shop and a kitchen from grandmother's day. The museum also offers guided town walks and opens the Steenwijk tower for climbing in summer.
