About the museum

The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam dates back to 1899: Major Visser bequeathed his historical collection to the city on condition that a museum be created for it. In the 1950s the municipal council set the focus on living Dutch artists; director Pierre Janssen bought the first works by Cobra artists at that time. Since 2016 the historical collection has again played an important role in the programme.

The museum has been housed since 1940 in the Sint Jacobsgasthuis, a neoclassical building of 1787 designed by Jan Giudici, which served as an old people's home until 1934. The building consists of two wings, formerly for men and women, with a chapel in the middle that now serves as the entrance area. In 2003 the layout was reorganised and the number of exhibition halls increased from four to eleven; in 2006 Queen Beatrix reopened the building. From 2013 visitors entered through the former chapel with café and shop, and MVRDV added a large red cabinet wall with collection pieces.

At the end of 2020 the museum closed for a renovation of the national monument by the municipality, and it reopened on 14 May 2022. The collection comprises around 15,000 objects, of which about 8,000 are historical pieces on the city's history and 7,000 are modern artworks since 1947, including a focus on Cobra, politically engaged contemporary art and drawings. With Monopole the museum also runs a second exhibition venue in the city.
