About the museum
The museum's roots lie in the "Turfproject" of 1982/83, in which stories and objects about peat extraction around the Reeuwijkse Plassen were collected. The foundation Oudheidkamer first displayed the finds in the old village school "De Rokende Turf" in Sluipwijk. By 1987 the collection had grown so large that it moved to the vacated farmhouse in the recreation area on the Oudeweg.
The farm dates from 1907 and is largely preserved in its original condition. In the entrance area stands a village school classroom from 1910, and in the film room a slide show runs about the peat extraction of the Reeuwijk land. The exhibition hall shows the history of Reeuwijk and its surroundings, while the stable is devoted to peat cutting, life on and by the lakes, cattle breeding, hunting and fishing. There is also a living kitchen, a laundry exhibition in the Stoephok, a cellar with a cheese brine bath and preserves, a bedroom, a parlour and a best room with linen and lace caps.
In the attic is the documentation centre with a large collection of school, club and family photographs from Reeuwijk and surroundings as well as genealogical data. The museum also offers lectures, tours by volunteers, treasure hunts for children and a carousel programme for primary school classes.
