About the museum
The house at the harbour of Schoonhoven was originally a 17th-century merchant's house named Brandenburg. The Jewish community bought it in 1823 and converted it into a synagogue by 1838; in 1868 it received a neoclassical façade. In the Second World War the interior was destroyed, and the community dissolved in 1947 and merged with the Rotterdam community.
After restoration, the building opened on 4 July 1952 as the Edelambachtshuys, a house of the gold- and silversmith trade connected with the St. Eloy Guild. A further restoration followed in 1983. The house was returned as far as possible to its original condition and still shows the women's gallery, a silversmith's cellar and the mikveh, the smallest monument in Schoonhoven.
On the upper floor is what the museum says is the largest museum collection of antique Schoonhoven silver in the Netherlands, with more than 800 objects from the period 1600 to 1930. There are also modern silver works and Jewish silverware. Admission is set at a symbolic price.
