Insight into the design process of designer Hella Jongerius through her textile archive, donated to the museum, with around 4,000 sketches, models and samples.
The museum was founded in 1958 as the Nederlands Textielmuseum and was initially housed in a former manufacturer’s villa. Its purpose was to document the wool industry that had shaped Tilburg for generations. In 1985 it moved into the former C. Mommers & Co. textile factory on Goirkestraat, once one of the city’s major employers. During an extensive renovation in 2008, the industrial building was modernized without losing its factory character.
The museum owes its current profile above all to the TextielLab, a professional workshop in the heart of the museum. For about 25 years, designers, artists and architects have been developing new fabrics there together with the museum’s specialists on computer-controlled weaving, knitting, embroidery and tufting machines as well as laser equipment. Visitors can follow the work up close; the Lab has produced, among other things, tapestries and textile walls for buildings in the Netherlands and abroad. Under the label “by TextielMuseum,” the museum also produces and sells its own design textiles.
The collection ranges from textile design and fashion to fine art and industrial heritage. In addition, there is what the museum describes as the largest specialist textile library in the Netherlands, with around 20,000 books, as well as archives on artists, designers and textile companies. In 2017 the museum won the BankGiro Loterij Museumprijs, and in 2018 the international Best in Heritage Award. It is run by the Stichting Mommerskwartier, which also includes the Regionaal Archief Tilburg and the Stadsmuseum Tilburg. In 2025, according to the museum, nearly 94,000 people visited – more than ever before.
