About the museum

The typewriter museum "Sjoch!" is a private museum in Gytsjerk (Giekerk). Its name is Frisian for "look" and echoes a typical visitor reaction: "Look, my grandfather had one of these too."

The operator is a trained typewriter mechanic who worked in this trade for more than 35 years, first at a Frisian insurance company. Through repairs he came to know every brand and design; from that grew a collection, which developed into a museum through donations from the neighborhood. He still works on machines today in the converted garage, while the exhibition is in the attic above.

Around 250 machines are on display, drawn from a stock of several hundred, including a Corona from 1912 with the @ symbol and a quiet Remington Noiseless from 1912. Visitors are guided personally through the museum; the operator also repairs machines for enthusiasts from across the country.
