About the museum
Vincent van Gogh lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885, where his father was a pastor. During this time hundreds of drawings and paintings were produced, culminating in the peasant scene "De aardappeleters" (The Potato Eaters). The museum in the village centre commemorates this: it shows how the young painter developed into an independent artist in Brabant.
It is housed in Nuenen's former municipal building from 1874. On 18 July 2010 the museum opened, initially under the name Vincentre. It was later rebuilt and extended with an annex, so that it is about two and a half times as large as before. Queen Máxima opened the renewed Van Gogh Village Museum on 16 May 2023.
Since the reopening, the permanent exhibition has included Vincent's Light Lab, where visitors carry out experiments on light and colour together with the company ASML and thus retrace what Van Gogh experimented with. In addition, mostly volunteer staff lead tours through the village to the places where Van Gogh lived and painted; the museum works together with the Van Gogh Sites Foundation on this.
