About the museum
The Pharmacy “Pod Łabędziem” (“At the Swan”) at ul. Gdańska 5 was founded in 1853. In 2003, on the initiative of Bartłomiej Wodyński, a private pharmacy museum was set up in its interiors. In 2017 the pharmacy collections became part of the collection of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz.
For the period of renovation the former museum was closed, so that the rooms could be adapted to the requirements of an institution entered in the register of museums. After the scholarly processing of the collections by the newly created Department of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy, the exhibition was opened to visitors as a new branch of the museum. Original furniture has survived in the rooms and gives the interiors an authentic character.
The collections include accessories for making medicines, medical objects, an extensive library and a galenic laboratory from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, regarded as unique in the country. The former pharmacy was not only a place where medicines were made and sold, but also produced candles, perfumes and marzipan, which is why the museum runs workshops for children and young people based on this versatile tradition. The pharmacy belongs to the Bydgoszcz trail Water, Industry and Crafts TeH2O.
