Muzeum Mydła i Historii Brudu

Private museum in Bydgoszcz’s Old Town, where guided tours are combined with soap-making workshops and the story of the history of hygiene.

Opening hoursAdmission 39 zł

About the museum

The museum was founded on 1 September 2012 by Daria Kieraszewicz and Adam Bujny. It is a private institution, and its organiser is the company Muzeum Mydła Kieraszewicz Bujny. The seat is in three townhouses on the northern side of ulica Długa in the Old Town of Bydgoszcz.

The exhibition traces the history of personal hygiene and washing: from the medieval bathhouse, through the nineteenth-century bathroom, to old bathing and laundry equipment. It shows, among other things, cast-iron baths, horsehair brushes, mangles and washing machines, as well as a collection of soaps and the moulds used to make them, along with documents and pre-war advertisements for cleaning products.

The visit follows a fixed format of a show lasting about 50 minutes: it begins with a workshop in which each participant makes their own soap and takes it home, after which the guide talks about the history of washing and dirt. In 2013 the museum was nominated for the plebiscite “7 nowych Cudów Polski” (“7 New Wonders of Poland”), and in 2017 it received the certificate of the Polish Tourist Organisation for the best tourism product.
