About the museum
The Museum of the Polish Post in Gdańsk was established in 1979 as a branch of the Museum of Post and Telecommunications in Wrocław; since 2003 it has been a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk. It is housed in the building of the Polish Post and Telegraph Office No. 1 in the Free City of Gdańsk, a symbol of Polishness and the place where the Second World War began on 1 September 1939.
The museum collects documents, iconography and memorabilia connected with the defence of the post office, the fate of the defenders and their families, and the life and activity of Poles in the Free City of Gdańsk. The mission of the institution is to preserve the memory of this defence as a symbol of resistance to Hitler’s terror.
After the reconstruction of the museum it was opened to visitors on 5 October 2026; the new exhibition includes areas that were previously inaccessible and has solutions that make access easier for people with special needs. The exhibition shows the course of the battle, the fate of the defenders shot by the Germans, the everyday life of the Polish community and the former work of the post office.
