About the museum
The house was designed by the architect and friend Manuel Travassos Valdez for the writer Miguel Torga (pen name of the physician Adolfo Correia da Rocha, 1907–1995); the work took place between 1952 and 1953. Torga lived there with his wife, Andrée Crabbé Rocha, and their daughter until his death in 1995. The lines of the house are simple and harmonious, and at the entrance stands the heather (urze) that the writer planted and adopted as his pen name, a sign of his attachment to the land.
The house museum opened to the public on 12 August 2007, on the centenary of the writer's birth. It presents a retrospective exhibition of Torga's life, with photographs, manuscripts, documents and personal objects, and also brings together first editions and works of art. The museum's motto is “Quem quiser conhecer-me, leia-me” (“Whoever wishes to know me, read me”).
The house hosts literary gatherings (tertúlias), guided visits, exhibitions, book presentations, meetings with writers, educational programmes and musical evenings.
