About the museum
The Museu Militar da Madeira was created in 1993 and is housed in the former Casa da Guarda (guardhouse) of the Palácio de São Lourenço, a fortress built at the beginning of the 16th century on the orders of King Manuel I to defend the population of Funchal. The building is classified as a National Monument.
The museum depends on the commander of the Military Zone of Madeira and, technically, on the Army's Directorate of Military History and Culture. It reopened in its current configuration on 12 May 2010, organised around three themes: Madeira in the context of Portuguese expansion, the military history of Madeira, and the fortifications and military infrastructure of the Region.
The exhibition occupies three rooms and brings together weapons collections from the 18th century to the present, old bronze artillery pieces and light weapons. A visual effects room presents, with 3D film and sensory effects, some 600 years of military presence in the archipelago.
