About the museum

Barryland belongs to the Fondation Barry, which since January 2005 has run the breeding and kennels of the famous St. Bernard dogs, previously kept by the canons of the Great St Bernard. The non-profit foundation continues a breeding tradition of more than three hundred years in the region of origin and wants to give the dogs a life appropriate to their species. To promote encounters between the animals and the public, it built the Barryland theme park. It replaced the former “Musée et Chiens du Saint-Bernard”, which was housed in an old arsenal.

The new building was constructed in about two years and opened on 26 June 2025. It covers an area of 2,400 square metres in the shape of a dog's paw and stands in a park of 22,000 square metres with outdoor enclosures. The construction costs of 24 million francs were borne by the foundation itself and a fundraising campaign. According to the foundation, the park can accommodate twice as many visitors as the old museum.

In terms of content, Barryland tells of the famous rescue dog Barry I, who lived from 1800 to 1812 at the hospice on the Great St Bernard, of the St. Bernard as part of Swiss culture, and of the dogs' work today as companions in social assignments. Upstairs, visitors can see the animals in their kennels, in the care and physiotherapy room and during training; four large outdoor enclosures are directly connected.

Highlights

  • Exhibitions on Barry the rescuer, Barry as a cultural icon and the St. Bernard as a therapy companion

  • Daily feedings and activities, workshops with the dogs by registration
