About the museum
The Lausanne surgeon Claude Verdan (1909–2006) was a pioneer of hand surgery in Switzerland. During his career he gathered several hundred objects relating to the hand – paintings, sculptures, tools, writings. He wanted a museum of its own for this collection and founded the Fondation Claude Verdan for that purpose in 1981. As early as 1983 the Musée de l'Élysée showed a first exhibition as a preview of a hand museum.
For sixteen years the foundation searched for a location, and the collection was housed, among other places, in the Bishop's Palace and the former cantonal hospital. With the support of Maurice Müller, the Canton of Vaud and the foundation, the Musée de la Main de l'Homme opened in 1997. Today it is called Musée de la main UNIL-CHUV and is located on Rue du Bugnon next to the university hospital CHUV.
The house sees itself as a place of scientific and cultural outreach. It develops themed exhibitions at the intersection of science, culture and society and, with immersive, hands-on formats, invites visitors to look at the body, perception and knowledge anew. The Main collection with over 1,600 pieces is not shown in the exhibition rooms but lent to other institutions; in addition there is an art collection of contemporary works acquired for exhibition projects. At the Café de la main you can round off your visit.
