Ghisla Art Collection

About the museum

The Ghisla Art Collection goes back to the collector couple Pierino and Martine Ghisla, who over more than forty years assembled works of 20th- and 21st-century art. To make the collection accessible to the public, the non-profit Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection was established in April 2014 and opened its premises in summer 2014.

The foundation is based in a futuristic new building by the Locarno firm Moro & Moro in the city centre, only a few metres from the marina. The works are spread across eight rooms on three floors. The hanging follows neither a strict chronology nor an arrangement by art movements; instead it is meant to convey the personal taste of the couple, who furnished the rooms as if they were expecting guests.

The collection includes masterpieces of Pop Art, Art Informel, Conceptual Art, abstract art and Neo-Dada, supplemented by works by up-and-coming, lesser-known artists. An audio guide is included in the admission price, and the foundation offers its own educational programmes for schools. In addition to the collection, the museum shows exhibitions every season.
