About the museum
The museum is housed in the Untervogthaus, which Sebastian Gysi had built in 1600 and which is regarded as the most important Gothic townhouse in Suhr. During the Peasants' War of 1653 it served the insurgents as a meeting place; the then Untervogt (bailiff), Hans Gysi, was among the leaders from Suhr. In the early 19th century the house was converted into a farmhouse and given a large barn.
In 1947 the municipality bought the plot for a school building. The building's survival is thanks to municipal president Friedrich Schmid; in 1953 it was restored and its extensions were removed. A foyer, library and meeting room were created on the ground floor, and the museum on the second floor. Within about twenty years the antiques dealer Samuel Janz turned the whole house into a local history museum. After his death in 1976 a museum commission continued to run it.
In 2003 the municipality decided to renovate the building and redesign the exhibition; the museum reopened in 2005. Today the permanent exhibition is spread over four floors and covers church and municipality, the transformation of settlement and landscape, crafts, trade, industry, agriculture and the importance of water. Also on display are the "Janz-Stübli", left in its original state, and the dollhouses. A renewal of the museum has been announced for 2026 and 2027.
