About the museum

The Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen was founded in 1985 as an association and initially responded with artistic actions to contested urban planning situations, for example in buildings slated for demolition such as the Volksbad or the Gewerbeschule. Between 1988 and 1995 it was active as a "wandering association" in temporary spaces, and from 1990 it received an annual contribution from the city.

After the property at Wassergasse 24 was cleared, the city provided a temporary space at Davidstrasse 40 at the end of 1992, where the institution has been firmly established ever since. Since 1996 the artistic direction has been openly advertised, and the program has increasingly opened up to international art. In 2004 the Kunst Halle moved into the first floor of the old warehouse; after a conversion by the Herisau architects Keller/Hubacher, these rooms now include a lobby and three exhibition rooms.

Since 2007 the house has been led by Giovanni Carmine. It sees itself as a platform and production site for contemporary art, supports artists in creating new works, works with art venues in Switzerland and abroad, and publishes catalogs. There is no collection of its own and no permanent exhibition; the house is open only during exhibitions.
