About the museum

The Kunsthaus Langenthal is located in the "Choufhüsi" at Marktgasse 13, a listed late-Baroque building with a clock tower, built between 1790 and 1808 to plans by Joseph Purtschert. The building served first as a department store until 1894 and then as a municipal building until 1992.

After the administration moved out, the Kunstverein Oberaargau proposed converting the building into an exhibition venue. Since 1992 the association has run the Kunsthaus here. It is now directed by Raffael Dörig and supported by the city of Langenthal, the canton of Bern and regional sponsors.

The house has no permanent collection display; instead it shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art with a focus on current Swiss work, thematic group shows and regularly, historical photography. Accompanying events include artist talks, programs such as "Kunst über Mittag" and the "Kunstbar", and a broad education program for schools, children and families.
