About the museum
The association that runs the museum was founded in 1910 to collect and preserve documents and objects relating to Moudon's past. Over time this grew into a rich collection, mostly dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1950 the museum moved into the Château de Rochefort at the highest point of the upper town.
The castle consists of 14th-century stone houses belonging to merchants, which became a manorial residence in 1595; around 1730 the building took its final form with the municipal bell tower on the stair tower. After a restoration between 1989 and 2000, the collections were rearranged: the finest pieces form scenes of everyday life in former times, while in the remaining rooms the museum presents thematic exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition includes, among other things, a 19th-century sidecar, signs from the more than forty inns that once existed in Moudon, tiles with humorous inscriptions, an illuminated model of the town around 1415, painted wallpaper from the 18th century and the largest collection of works by the painter Emile-David Turrian (1869–1906).
