About the museum
The Museo Hermann Hesse opened in 1997 in the Torre Camuzzi in Montagnola and was the first museum in Switzerland dedicated to the German-Swiss writer. It is run by the Fondazione Hermann Hesse Montagnola. Hesse lived from 1919 to 1931 in an apartment in the nearby Casa Camuzzi and then, until his death in 1962, in the Casa Rossa; both houses are now privately owned.
The late medieval tower was remodelled in the neo-Gothic style by the Camuzzi family in the 19th century. The architect Nicola Losinger restored it in 1995 and 1996 as living quarters and returned the building to its late 19th-century state before it became a museum.
The permanent exhibition aims to convey the atmosphere in which Hesse lived for more than forty years south of the Alps. It displays personal belongings, photographs, books and watercolours and addresses themes such as India and the genesis of "The Glass Bead Game". For Hesse's 150th birthday in 2027 the exhibition will be redesigned; the house is closed for this from 2 November 2026 to 19 March 2027.
