About the museum
The museum's collection was begun in 1853 by the young teacher Johann Georg Pfund, who looked after it until his death in 1903. It grew quickly and often had to move: in 1860 the municipal council provided a room in the Old School House, in 1872 it moved to a room in the old municipal archive, later to the old fire-engine house and for a time to a school building where it could not be visited.
Only in 1935 did the collection find its present home on the upper floor of the Kirchenschulhaus, and from then on it was known as the Heimatmuseum. After the kindergarten was closed in 1973, the whole building could be used as a museum, but the house continues to suffer from a lack of space. The Pfund family was followed by other custodians; since 2007 a museum commission appointed by the municipal council has looked after the collection; since 2016 Peter Wegmann has headed the museum.
Today the permanent exhibition shows the history of the municipality and its inhabitants on three floors, from the formation of the landscape to the present day. Further areas are devoted to crafts and trades, household, agriculture, the water and electricity works, the fire brigade, traditional costumes and a large weapons collection. Particularly popular is the working Linotype hot-metal typesetting machine on which the "Klettgauer Zeitung" was set from 1912 to 1970.
