About the museum
Portail des Nations goes back to an initiative by Ivan Pictet, who comes from international finance and, together with the then Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, wanted to create a public center at the Palais des Nations. The Fondation Portail des Nations was established in 2019; in 2020 the UN General Assembly approved the donation. Construction began in 2024, and the opening took place on June 7, 2026.
The complex of nearly 2,000 square meters consists of pavilions set into the terrain below the Allée des Drapeaux; they were designed by the Geneva architects Charles Pictet Baptiste Broillet Associés. The foundation operates the Portal until the end of 2027; from 2028, the UN Office in Geneva (ONUG) is to take over as the official visitor center of the United Nations.
At its heart is the roughly 60-minute immersive experience "Together" in three pavilions. In "Langage," a 270-degree projection tells the story of the UN languages; "Connaissance" is about collective knowledge and the successes of international cooperation; and in "Réponse," guests take on the role of a member state and vote on a fictional resolution. There is also the Café des Nations and a shop.
