About the museum

The British rock band Queen came to Montreux in 1978 to record the album "Jazz". At the time, Mountain Studios was regarded as one of the best-equipped recording studios in Europe. A year later the band bought the studio, which they owned until the mid-1990s, and recorded the majority of several of their most successful albums there. Freddie Mercury also had a close bond with the town; in his last months he worked here on his final vocal recordings.

After the studio moved out in 2003 for renovation reasons, the exhibition "Queen: The Studio Experience" was created in the Casino Barrière de Montreux complex and opened by Brian May on 2 December 2013. It is under the patronage of the Mercury Phoenix Trust; the exhibition benefits the foundation.

The rooms of the former Mountain Studios have been faithfully restored. On display are mementos from the band's personal archive, including handwritten lyrics, instruments, stage costumes and tape boxes. The control room has been largely preserved as it was in the Queen years, with only the original Neve mixing desk replaced by a replica on which visitors can remix Queen classics themselves. In the "Made in Heaven Room" you can stand on the spot where Freddie Mercury recorded his last song.
