About the museum
In 1972 the Deutschfreiburger Heimatkundeverein, the parish of Tafers and the municipality of Tafers jointly founded the foundation of the Sensler Museum. Its purpose was to seek out, preserve and make accessible to the public the known and unknown treasures of the Sense district. In 1975 the museum was able to open its doors for the first time in the village centre of Tafers.
It is housed in a Sense-district timber house from 1780. The master carpenter Hans Meuwly built it as a parish school but followed the pattern of a farmhouse. Later the building served, among other things, as a debt collection and bankruptcy office, as a justice of the peace court, as a sexton's house and as a private home. Today it belongs to the Einfache Gesellschaft Sigristenhaus, which rents it to the museum foundation.
The permanent exhibition, renewed since 2013, presents the Sense district in six thematic areas: dialect, history, everyday life, economy, pilgrimage and musical creation. In addition there are changing exhibitions on the region and on artistic work in the Sense district. In 2025 the museum celebrated its 50th anniversary.
