About the museum

Aberdeen Treasure Hub is the collection store of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, run by Aberdeen City Council. It was built to hold the city's art and objects when they are not on display. Before it opened, much of the collection was kept in the basements of the Art Gallery and in other museum stores.

The building cares for more than 100,000 items that are recognised as being of national significance. Paintings hang on sliding mesh walls and are arranged by size, so each wall mixes styles and subjects. Many objects stand on open shelving, others are boxed, and automated shelving stacks are also part of the store. Items include fashion and designs by Bill Gibb, Venetian glass, remains of Aberdeen's comb-making industry and a large sign from the Brent Delta oil platform. Cataloguing, cleaning and conservation continue, so the displays change.

The Hub is mainly a working store and research centre. Researchers, schools and special interest groups can arrange tailored visits and behind-the-scenes tours, and public open days with short highlight tours led by volunteers are held about three times a year.
