About the museum
The museum occupies the former livestock mart of Alford, a Category A listed timber building that opened in 1905 and held its last sales in 1986. Historic Environment Scotland describes it as an exceptionally rare, largely intact timber livestock mart. The museum opened in the building in 1991 and is run entirely by volunteers as a Scottish charity.
The original auction ring with its tiered seating stands at the centre of the building. The museum shows rural life in Donside through reconstructed workshops of a tailor, a shoemaker, a blacksmith and a joiner, a village school room, and a farm kitchen with a range of domestic objects. The former livestock pens now hold tractors, mills and other farm machinery from the horse and tractor eras. A waterwheel outside, dating from around 1845 and given to the museum in 1993, is still driven by water.
Further attractions include a working 1974 Rock-Ola jukebox and a model railway showing a Scottish line as it looked in 1945. The museum also has a shop, archives and a family history service.
