About the museum
Ash Museum is run by the Ash and District Local History Museum Society, a registered charity. It records the history of Ash, Ash Vale, Ash Green and Tongham, from prehistory to the present day, in peacetime and in war.
The museum is housed in the Cemetery Chapel in Ash Cemetery. Its best-known object is a hand-pulled funeral bier that was in use until about 1977. Other displays include the 1860 foundation stone and school log books of the village school, an 1884 rainwater head, trophies from Tongham School, memorabilia from Tolley's Garage and a crucifix in a bottle made by an Italian prisoner of war in 1944.
The society also keeps a separate History Room behind Ash Victoria Hall, which holds documents, maps and photographs for researchers and can be visited by appointment. Its website has pages on local topics such as the war memorial, Victoria Hall and VE Day in Ash Vale, and an audio tour of the cemetery and churchyard.
