About the museum
Baldock Museum belongs to the Baldock Museum and Local History Society, a volunteer charity. The society began in 1992, when members of the Baldock Society formed a local history group to promote interest in the town’s past, collect objects and raise money for a museum. In the mid-1990s it held temporary displays during the Baldock Festival in borrowed spaces, including the community centre and empty shops.
After negotiations with the district council, two small rooms in the old Town Hall were allocated to the society in December 1998 for a museum. The society took the name Baldock Museum and Local History Society in 2001 and became a registered charity in 2002. In 2013 the Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre took over management of the Town Hall, though not the museum. A refurbishment in 2019 knocked through the dividing wall and linked the museum to the centre.
The museum is intended to show the changing fortunes of the market town, which was founded by the Knights Templar around 1148 on the site of an earlier Iron Age and Roman town. Following recent building work, its collection is in storage while a new layout with updated displays is planned, and only a small display of images of Baldock, including drawings and paintings, is shown.
