Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

Art and local history museum of Berwick Barracks, closed during the Living Barracks redevelopment, with a new museum planned for 2027.

Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2027). The museum and gallery is closed during the Living Barracks redevelopment of Berwick Barracks; a new museum is planned for 2027 and English Heritage looks after the collections meanwhile.

About the museum

Berwick Museum and Art Gallery grew out of the town's earlier museum and library at 32 Marygate, which closed in the 1980s, and was later housed in the Clock Block of Berwick Barracks. Its best-known holding is the Burrell Collection: when Sir William Burrell, the Glasgow shipowner and collector, moved to nearby Hutton Castle, he gave about 50 paintings and 300 decorative items to Berwick. The collection includes works by Degas, Boudin and Maris, ancient Roman and Venetian glass, Japanese imari pottery and Ming porcelain, and is described as the most important art collection in public ownership in Northumberland.

The museum and gallery is currently closed so that development work can be carried out on the East Block of the barracks. English Heritage is looking after the collections during the transition. Building work on the Living Barracks project began in 2026, and English Heritage plans to reopen the site to the public in autumn 2027, when a new museum and gallery with spaces linking the town, the barracks and the regiment is scheduled to open.
