About the museum
Blitz and Pieces is a private museum of the British Home Front in the Second World War, owned and run by Darren Stride at Scratby, near Great Yarmouth. The collection began after his grandfather, a former private in the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, gave him his service medals before he died in 2001. Many other items were later donated by the public and visitors.
The displays are housed in a 1940s prefabricated building, a 1930s wooden military hut and several large sheds. They include a street scene with two period shops, a chemist’s and a grocer’s, a 1940s kitchen and living room, an Anderson shelter, uniforms, helmets and other wartime objects. The chemist’s display came from the Yesterday’s World attraction in Great Yarmouth after it closed in 2014.
The museum also shows items connected with the television comedy Dad’s Army, including a reconstruction of Captain Mainwaring’s office in a 1930s beach hut. In 2014 it was a finalist in a Channel 4 television competition for sheds.
